Israeli court sentences Palestinian to four life terms

Israel’s Ofer military court on Wednesday sentenced Palestinian detainee Asem al-Barghouti to four life sentences, according to Asra Media. video

Al-Barghouti, a resident of Kobar village north of Ramallah, was convicted by an Israeli court on 28 November 2019 of murder after carrying out two separate shooting attacks in which two Israeli soldiers and a settler were killed.

Al-Barghouti also faced charges of attempting to kill 12 soldiers and settlers in the same attacks.

Al-Barghouti had previously served an 11-year prison term in Israeli jails, on charges of being a member of al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s armed wing, before he was released in April 2018.

His father is an ex-prisoner who had served a total of 26 years in Israeli jails, and his brother Saleh was assassinated by Israeli occupation forces in 2018 over a shooting attack on Israeli soldiers and settlers near Ramallah.

IOA moves newly detained Palestinian to Ramla prison clinic

Israeli occupation authorities (IOA) on Thursday moved Sheikh Omar al-Barghouti, who was arrested from his home on Tuesday, to Ramla prison clinic after extending his detention for six days.

Meanwhile, al-Barghouti's son Mohammed, who was abducted with him on the same day, was moved to Etzion jail after having his detention extended for six days too.

Al-Barghouti, who suffers from several health problems, was kidnapped along with his son Mohammed from their home in Kobar village north of Ramallah City in the Occupied West Bank on Tuesday.

Al-Barghouti, a father of a martyr and a detainee, had served a total of 25 years in Israeli jails.

Home of Palestinian Prisoner and Slain Brother to be Demolished by Israeli Forces

Israeli forces on Monday, handed a home demolition order to the family of slain Palestinian Saleh Barghouthi and his brother, Qassam Barghouthi.

Barghouthi’s family were given until April 8 to evacuate their two-floor home in Kobar village, in the central West bank city of Ramallah, the Palestinian Information Center reported.

On December 12, 2018, Saleh Omar Barghouthi, 29, was extra judicially assassinated by Israeli soldiers under the pretext that he was allegedly involved in a shooting targeting colonialist settlers.

Qassem Barghouthi was arrested in September 2019 on charges of his alleged involvement in an attack in which an Israeli settler was killed and two others injured in Deir Ibzi village in Ramallah.

In related news, the Israeli forces arrested Omar Barghouthi, the father of the 2 men, and placed him under administrative detention, with no charge or trial, on Tuesday.

Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention states that;

  • No protected person may be punished for an offence he or she has not personally committed. Collective penalties and likewise all measures of intimidation or of terrorism are prohibited.
  • Reprisals against protected persons and their property are prohibited.

IOA keeps Sheikh Barghouti in administrative detention

Israeli occupation authorities (IOA) on Tuesday decided to hold Sheikh Omar al-Barghouti in administrative detention.

Prisoners Media Office said, quoting al-Barghouti's family, that the IOA decided to detain him until further notice without charge or trial.

Al-Barghouti and his son Mohammed were kidnapped from their home at dawn Tuesday during a raid on Kobar village in Ramallah.

Al-Barghouti is a Palestinian icon of resistance and steadfastness. He is a father of a martyr and a political prisoner. Al-Barghouti himself had served a total of 25 years in Israeli jails.

An Israeli army unit raided the central West Bank city of Ramallah early this morning in an apparent search-and-arrest campaign, said local sources.

They said the forces were in the vicinity of the Palestinian Legislative Council were youths belted them with stones and the soldiers responded by firing teargas canisters and stun grenades to disperse the youth.

Soldiers also raided two Ramallah-area villages and detained Omar Barghouti and his son, Mohammad, in the village of Kubar, north of Ramallah, and Mahmoud Murrar, a lawyer, in the village of Budrus, west of Ramallah, and seized his car.  video

The soldiers also raided several homes of people related to Murrar.

In pre-demolition step, IOF maps home of prisoners in Ramallah

The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) on Thursday stormed the home of Palestinian prisoner Karmal and Qassam al-Barghouthi in Kobar village, northwest of Ramallah, and took their measurements as a prelude to demolishing it.

According to local eyewitnesses, Israeli troops encircled the house of al-Barghouthi family in Kobar before storming it.

The soldiers also wreaked havoc on furniture as they were searching the house and herded members of the family together into one room.

The Shin Bet, Israel’s internal intelligence service, had released the mother of the two prisoners, Widad al-Barghouthi, in last September after detaining her for 16 days.

IOF arrest university lecturer from Ramallah

Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) on Sunday morning launched a raid and arrest campaign in the West Bank, where they arrested four Palestinians including a university lecturer.

The detainees included a media lecturer at Birzeit University, Widad Barghouti (mother of the two prisoners Qassam and Carmel Barghouti) from Kobar village north of Ramallah.

IOF also raided the house of Sheikh Omar al-Barghouthi, father of the martyr Saleh and the captive Asim from the same village.

In addition, they arrested two men from Al-Arroub refugee camp north of Hebron and Al-Issawiya neighbor east of occupied Jerusalem.

Finally, they confiscated a vehicle from Hussan village west of Bethlehem.
