Israeli forces early today demolished the family homes of two alleged Palestinian attackers in Ramallah and nearby Birzeit town, amidst intense clashes with the youths, WAFA correspondent said. video She said that a large Israeli army force raided the town of Birzeit in the after midnight hours and surrounded the family home of Yazan Maghames before the military bulldozers proceeded to demolish it and level it to the ground. Youths clashed with the Israeli soldiers, who fired tear gas canisters towards them and at homes causing large number of suffocation cases. At the same time, soldiers raided the Ramallah neighborhood of al-Tireh |
and demolished using hand tools the family residence Walid Hanatsheh since it is located in an apartment building.
Witnesses said that the soldiers surrounded the 6-floor building, inhabited by 13 families before proceeding to demolish the inner and outer walls of the Hanatsheh apartment.
Residents of the building said the soldiers forced them to stay indoors as children, woken up by the sound to the soldiers and the use of heavy tools to demolish the Hanatsheh apartment, were frightened. Serious damage was caused to the entrance to the building and some apartments, they said.
Youth pelted the soldiers with stones as they were leaving al-Tireh.
Hanatsheh and Maghames, are currently in Israeli custody for their alleged involvement along with Samer Arbeed in the killing of an Israeli settler near the illegal colonial settlement of Dolev, located near the Palestinian village of Ras Karkar, in August 2019.
In January, the Israeli army informed the families of the intention to demolish their houses.
Israel resorts to collective punishment against families and neighborhoods of alleged Palestinian attackers. This policy does not apply to Israelis who were involved in fatal attacks against Palestinians.
The policy was widely condemned by human rights groups as war crime and crime against humanity.

The Israeli Supreme Court today gave the go-ahead to demolish the Ramallah-area family homes of five Palestinian detainees allegedly involved in the killing of a settler in late August 2019.
Israeli media reported that the Israeli court unanimously approved the demolition despite multiple petitions filed by the prisoners’ families against the demolition.
The court explained its approval by the need to “establish credible deterrence against attacks.”
Israel commenced in January the trial of the five prisoners, who were detained in December purportedly for being responsible for the killing of an Israeli settler in an attack at Ein Bunin natural spring near the Ramallah-area village of Ras Karkar.
Israel resorts to punitively demolish homes of Palestinians accused of being involved in attacks against Israelis, a policy that Israel does not apply to Israeli Jews involved in fatal attacks against Palestinians.

Israeli forces, overnight Thursday, notified the families of three alleged Palestinian attackers, of their intention to demolish their houses across the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian News and Info Agency reported.
The Palestine Prisoners’ Society (PPS) confirmed that Israeli forces broke into the family home of Mohammad Walid Hanatsheh, in Attira neighborhood of the central West Bank city of Ramallah, and handed the family a military order to demolish their house.
Forces also handed the family of Yazan Mghamas, a military order to demolish their house in an incursion in Birzeit town, north of Ramallah.
Hanatsheh and Mghamas, are currently in Israeli custody for their alleged involvement along with Samer Arbid in the killing of an Israeli settler near the illegal colonial settlement of Dolev, near the Palestinian village of Ras Karkar, in August 2019. video
Arbid was hospitalized in critical condition for 45 days after undergoing interrogation with the Israeli internal security agency, the Shin Bet, for his purported involvement in the settler’s killing.
Meanwhile, Israeli military handed a similar demolition order to the family of Mahmoud Atawneh in Beit Kahel town, northwest of Hebron, southern occupied West Bank.
Kamel Atawneh said that soldiers invaded his 140-meter-sized house, and took photos and measurements in preparation for the planned punitive demolition.
Atawneh’s son, Mahmoud, who is currently in Israeli custody, is accused of allegedly stabbing a settler at the Gush Etzion colonial settlement bloc, south of Bethlehem, in July 2019.
Israel resorts to punitively demolishing the family homes of Palestinians as a way to intimidate, and deter others from attempting to injure Israelis in the future.
Interesting to note that Israel does not apply the same policy to Israeli settlers involved in fatal attacks against Palestinians.
Article 33 of the 4th Geneva Convention states that collective punishment is a war crime.

The Committee of Prisoners and Former Prisoners Affairs said that Samer Arbid, 44, from Ramallah suffers from signs of extreme torture, to which he was subjected during interrogation in Israeli jails, Quds News Network reported.
The committee said in a statement on Wednesday that Arbid is held now in the clinic of Ramleh jail. He suffers from severe pain in his chest and kidneys.
He also lost all his toenails, and has problems in his right ear due to the brutal torture by the Israelis. video
The committee noted that the Isreali army had arrested Arbid, on September 25, 2019, after brutally attacking him, and then sent him to Ofer prison.
Arbid was subjected to military interrogation, as he was tortured using “Shabeh” technique. He was also severely beaten in different areas of his body.
After that, Arbid was sent to Maskubiyyeh interrogation center, where “exceptional” torture techniques were used against him, which made him fall into a coma.
He was also savagely beaten, suffering from ribs fractures, and subsequently became completely unconscious, and was moved to Hadasah hospital, and diagnosed with kidney failure.
Arbid was critically ill, in the intensive care unit at Hadasah hospital for 45 days, after which he was sent to the clinic of Ramleh jail, where he remains currently.
The committee stressed that what has been going on with Arbid is “a real crime, which has been committed under blatant cover of [the Israeli] law, noting that the Shin Bet received permission from the Israeli supreme court to use exceptional interrogation and torture techniques against Arbid, which violates all international covenants and human rights norms.”

Several Israeli army jeeps invaded, on Thursday at dawn, the family home of a Palestinian detainee near the central West Bank city of Ramallah, before taking measurements of the property in preparation for detonating it.
Media sources said the soldiers invaded and surrounded the entire area of the home of Qassam Barghouthi, in Kobar town, north of Ramallah, before storming the property and taking the measurements.
The Israeli army said this step is meant to prepare for detonating the property in the near future, after determining the needed measures.
The army alleges that Qassam is a member of the group that carried out the explosion in Ein Abwein, leading to the death of an Israeli settler.
Rina Shnerb, 17, from Lod, was killed, while her brother Dvir, 19, suffered serious wounds, and her father Eitan, 46, was mildly injured, when an improvised explosive went off near them while they were hiking near Ein Abwein spring northwest of Ramallah.
Israel’s home demolition policy is an illegal act of collective punishment targeting entire families in direct violation of various international resolutions and human rights treaties.
