An investigation, released by Israeli human rights group B’Tselem, revealed that Israeli forces destroyed evidence related to the murder of Abdel Fattah, who was executed by extremist settlers, earlier this month, in the northern occupied West Bank, and that this propagated a misleading version of events.
Israeli troops claimed, at the time, that 23-year-old Muhammad Abdel Fattah was shot dead on 3 April, after he tried to stab an Israeli settler in a car, who then shot him in self-defense.
However, witnesses told B’Tselem that Abdel Fattah had, in fact, been throwing stones at Israeli settlers’ cars driving near the Palestinian village of Huwwara, in the Nablus district. A settler pulled over, after a stone hit his vehicle, and fired two shots at Abdel Fattah, while still in his car and before getting out and firing “several more shots” as the Palestinian crouched behind movable waste containers.
The settler who shot Abdel Fattah was identified, by the Israeli daily Haaretz, as Joshua Sherman, a resident of the illegal Israel settlement of Elon Moreh and an activist on behalf of the Union of the Right-Wing Parties.
“A truck driving along the road also stopped, the driver got out, came over to stand next to Sherman, and the two men fired several more shots at Abdel Fattah, who was lying wounded on the ground,” B’Tselem’s statement added.
‘Ensure that the truth never comes to light’
The Palestinian, a resident of the village of Khirbet Qeis and a father of one, reportedly succumbed to his wounds in an Israeli hospital.
Another Palestinian, working in a nearby shop, was also reportedly hit by a bullet to the abdomen, B’Tselem said.
“Minutes after the two settlers opened fire, Israeli military jeeps arrived on the scene and soldiers used stun grenades to disperse the crowd that had begun to gather,” the NGO wrote.
“Immediately after that, about eight soldiers went into two nearby shops to check their security cameras.”
According to witnesses, the soldiers filmed the security camera footage on their mobile phones, before erasing the video from the shop DVRs.
B’Tselem denounced the actions of the army, arguing that the fact that the settlers were not detained, and that footage of the killing was destroyed, reflected efforts “to ensure that the truth never comes to light and the shooters would not face any charges or be held accountable in any way.”
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), 37 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces – not including Israeli civilians – since the beginning of the year.
Three Israelis have been killed by Palestinians, during the same time frame.

The head of the West Bank settlement’s council on Monday presented certificates of appreciation to the Israeli settlers who killed the 23-year-old Palestinian father Mohammed Abdel Fattah two weeks ago.
Yossi Dagan, head of the illegal Settlements Council, said that this honoring was a response to an investigation by human rights group B’Tselem, which was released on Sunday.
The investigation revealed that the Israeli army destroyed evidence related to the murder of Abdel Fattah who was executed by extremist settlers earlier this month in the northern occupied West Bank.
The Israeli murderers claimed that Abdel Fattah tried to stab an Israeli girl, which pushed her father to shoot him to defend his daughter.
The Israeli claims have been proved to be lies.

Joan, the seven-month-old girl, will no longer sit on her father's lap, play with him, and enjoy his endless love and kisses.
An Israeli settler decided to put an end to the beautiful relationship between Mohammed Abdul-Fattah and his little daughter Joan, and to fill a home, that was once full of joy and love, with sorrow and grief.
On Wednesday, 3 April, while Mohammed was heading to his work from Salfit to Nablus, an armed Israeli settler shot him dead at point-blank range near Huwara checkpoint.
Mohammed got married a year and a half ago, and his marriage was the biggest joy in the family's home, but when Joan came to this world she became the most beautiful gift in Mohammed's life.
Mohammed's grieving mother said, with tears filling her eyes, "Since Joan was born, Mohammed spent most of his time at home. He was very attached to her."
Hundreds of social media users shared pictures of martyr Mohammed Abdul-Fattah and his baby Joan and wrote comments expressing their pain and condemning the Israeli settlers' repeated crimes against the Palestinians.
An Israeli settler's hate-fueled bullets made little Joan experience loss and pain at a very early stage of her life. Seven months with her father were never enough. She will remember him through pictures only.

New investigation by human rights group B’Tselem, which was released on Sunday, revealed that the Israeli army destroyed evidence related to the murder of a Palestinian 23-year-old father, who was executed by extremist settlers earlier this month in the northern occupied West Bank.
Three Israelis claimed that Mohammad Abdel Fattah tried to stab an Israeli girl, which pushed her father to shoot him to defend his daughter.
The Israeli claims have been proved to be lies.
Witnesses told B’Tselem that Abdel Fattah was throwing stones at settlers’ cars breaking into the West Bank village of Huwwara when a settler pulled over after a stone hit his vehicle and fired two shots at Abdel Fattah while still in his car, then he got out and fired several more shots at the Palestinian young man.
“A truck driving along the road also stopped, and the driver got out,” B’Tselem’s statement added.
“He came over to stand next to Sherman, and the two men fired several more shots at Abdel Fattah, who was lying wounded on the ground.”
A video trended at the time of the crime, showed Abdel Fattah lying on the ground while settlers harass him and Israeli soldiers preventing anyone from providing medical care.
Another Palestinian working in a nearby shop was also reportedly hit by a bullet to the abdomen, B’Tselem said.
“Minutes after the two settlers opened fire, Israeli military jeeps arrived on the scene and soldiers used stun grenades to disperse the crowd that had begun to gather,” the report revealed.

Israeli settlers execute Muhammad ‘Abd al-Fatah; military covers up their deed
B’Tselem’s investigation has found that in an incident reported by the media as an attempted stabbing at Huwarah on 3 April 2019, Muhammad ‘Abd al-Fatah had been throwing stones at Israeli cars driving along the road and was then shot by a settler who pulled over.
As al-Fatah lay wounded on the ground, the settler, along with another settler who also pulled over, shot him again, killing him. Soldiers erased video footage of the incident.
On 3 April 2019, media reports stated that a “would-be Palestinian attacker was shot dead Wednesday morning during an attempted stabbing near Huwara in the West Bank. The man was shot by two armed Israeli civilians.” Reports added that the assailant had attempted to stab a father and his daughter.
B'Tselem's investigation of the incident found that at 8:30 A.M. that morning, Muhammad 'Abd al-Fatah – a 23-year-old Palestinian from Khirbet Qeis, Salfit District, who was married and had a daughter – crossed the road. He stopped by a dumpster across from the village square in the nearby village of Beita and started throwing stones at cars bearing Israeli license plates that were heading from the direction of Huwarah towards the village of Za’tarah and Tapuah Junction. ‘Abd al-Fatah threw stones at two passing cars and then threw a third stone, which hit a car.
The driver, an Israeli named Yehoshua Sherman, pulled over. Then two gunshots were heard, apparently fired from inside the vehicle. The driver then got out of the car.
At that point, ‘Abd al-Fatah was crouching among the dumpsters. Sherman approached him and fired several more shots at him. A truck driving along the road also stopped, and the driver got out. He came over to stand next to Sherman, and the two men fired several more shots at ‘Abd al-Fatah, who was lying wounded on the ground. According to media reports, ‘Abd al-Fatah succumbed to his wounds a short while later, at Beilinson Hospital in Israel.
This chain of events is also clearly established by partial video footage published in the media. The footage shows Sherman’s car stopping near ‘Abd al-Fatah. Then, about fifteen seconds later, Sherman is seen getting out of the car. Next, a truck is seen pulling over. At that point, the footage breaks off. When it resumes, Sherman and the truck driver are seen firing at ‘Abd al-Fatah.
A young man who works in a nearby shop was hit in the abdomen by one of the shots. He was treated in Rafidiya Hospital, Nablus, and discharged on 7 April. Minutes after the two settlers opened fire, Israeli military jeeps arrived on the scene and soldiers used stun grenades to disperse the crowd that had begun to gather.
Immediately after that, about eight soldiers went into two nearby shops to check their security cameras. They dismantled a DVR in one of the shops and left. About twenty minutes later, the soldiers returned to the shop, reinstalled the DVR and watched the footage. Two soldiers filmed the screen with their mobile phones. They then erased the footage from the DVR and left.
B’Tselem’s investigation found that, contrary to media reports, Sherman’s shooting of ‘Abd al-Fatah was unjustified, as the latter had already moved away from the car and was kneeling behind some dumpsters. Moreover, there was clearly no justification whatsoever for the additional shots that Sherman and the truck driver fired at ‘Abd al-Fatah when he was already lying injured on the ground.
The Israeli security forces that arrived on the scene ignored these facts. They did nothing to arrest the two settlers, promptly drove the Palestinians away from the scene, and then addressed the urgent task of eliminating any footage of the incident, to ensure that the truth never comes to light and the shooters would not face any charges or be held accountable in any way.
The identity of both shooters is known. If the authorities so choose, they could easily track them down, at least for questioning. Yet given the troops’ conduct immediately after the incident, and Israel’s longstanding policy, the chances of this are slim to none.

The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates expressed surprise at the silence of the world community regarding what it said were Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people, saying “the Palestinians are about to lose faith in the ability of the United Nations to provide it with protection from the brutality of the Israeli occupation,” on Wednesday.
Earlier on Wednesday, an Israeli settler shot dead a 23-year-old Palestinian and injured another near the Huwwara checkpoint, in the northern occupied West Bank district of Nablus.
The ministry said in a statement, “We are very surprised at the silence of the international community on such crimes and the indifference countries exhibit towards the life of the Palestinian citizen.”
The ministry held the Israeli government fully responsible for “the crimes of the settlers and the provocative assaults by organized groups known to the occupying state and its security forces which receive training and are armed in the open by the occupation forces and which commit the most hideous crimes against our people, their land, property and holy places without these forces doing anything regarding this, rather cover and support their activities while providing them with political and security umbrella.”
The statement stressed, "The world must understand that our people are about to lose confidence in the ability of the United Nations and its institutions to provide them protection from the brutality of occupation and the armed settler militias that are considered a battalion in the occupation army."

The Israeli settler who shot and killed the young man tried to claim that “he had a knife” – but video footage taken by another Israeli settler on the scene, showing the brutal and callous treatment of Adel-Fattah’s body after he was killed, shows that there was no weapon.
In the video, a soldier and a settler are seen kicking the young man’s corpse, flipping him over and going through his pockets, finding nothing.
According to eyewitnesses, the claim of an attempted stabbing were completely false.
They said that Mohammad was a truck driver who was waiting at the checkpoint when the Israeli settler closed the road with his car. Khaled then got out of his car and tried to tell the settler to move. But the Israeli settler began shooting.
Khaled Rawajba, an employee at an auto repair shop on the side of the road, heard the altercation and stepped out of his workplace to see what was happening. He was then shot as well, and seriously wounded.

Israeli driver opens fire on knife-wielding man who tried to stab him inside his own vehicle; second armed Israeli driver also opens fire in incident near Nablus; no other injuries reported
A would-be Palestinian attacker was shot dead Wednesday morning during an attempted stabbing near Huwara in the West Bank. The man was shot by two armed Israeli civilians, including his target.
The attacker was evacuated to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva in critical condition and died shortly afterwards. No one else was harmed in the incident.
Initial reports said the attacker blocked an Israeli vehicle in which a father and his daughter were sitting, at a junction near Huwara on Route 60, close to the Palestinian city of Nablus. He approached the car’s driver with a knife in his hand when the driver and an Israeli driving a nearby truck opened fire.
The driver was later named as Yehoshua Sherman, who runs the field campaign for the New Right Party.
“I went to work and drove from Elon Moreh towards the Tapuach Junction,” said Sherman. “At one of the junctions (along the way) a terrorist charged at the car and tried to open the door. I got out of the car (from the other door) and as he was making his way to me, I shot him along with another man who driving a truck behind me.”
Yossi Dagan, the head of Shomron Regional Council, expressed his support for the two Israelis who neutralized the attacker: “This is how one should act — firmly, against those who seek our harm, and with no fear,” Dagan said.
“This event highlights the importance of finishing the new road that bypasses Hawara, as we’ve agreed with the prime minister. There is no reason why Israeli residents should drive through hostile Arab communities every morning and endanger their lives and their children’s lives,” said Dagan. "The road should be completed swiftly.”
In video - Palestinian shot dead by Israeli settler, another injured
A Palestinian was shot and killed by an Israeli settler, while another was injured at the Huwwara checkpoint in the northern occupied West Bank district of Nablus, on Wednesday, for allegedly attempting to carry out a stabbing attack.
Medical sources reported that the shot Palestinian was taken in critical condition to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, east of Tel Aviv, in central Israel, where he was pronounced dead.
Sources identified the killed Palestinian as Muhammad Abed al-Fattah, 23, a resident from the northern West Bank district of Salfit.
Local sources said that an Israeli settler, identified as Joshua Sherman, from the illegal settlement of Elon Moreh, northeast of the Nablus district, blocked the road with his vehicle, preventing al-Fattah from crossing the road, and opened fire at him.
However, Hebrew-language news outlets reported that al-Fattah was allegedly in possession of a knife and attempted to carry out a stabbing attack in the area.
Another Palestinian was injured after being struck with a stray bullet fired by Sherman.
The injured Palestinian, identified as Khaled Ruwayja, 22, was transferred to Rafidia Surgical Hospital in Nablus for treatment.
His medical condition was described as moderate.
